A sports massage can be stimulating, it can be relaxing, or it can be a relief from pain. The purpose of a sports massage is very specific. It is designed to prevent and treat sports injuries, relieve muscle pain, working out the soreness, increase flexibility and range of motion, increase the circulation of blood in the body and increases flow in lymphatic system, prepare the athlete for the mental game, and help him achieve peak performance in his sports event.

Techniques for sports massage are borrowed from traditional massage styles, such as Shiatsu and Swedish massage. Bodywork is also very sport-specific. Sports massage can be used for any team sport players, tennis and golf players, skiers, swimmers, gymnasts and just about any sport that includes powerful movements. In fact, some people get sports massages when they do not do sports, if they are simply working out vigorously. Others even get sports massages after physical jobs like moving furniture or planting a garden.

With your muscles in the proper condition and balance, and your mind in a positive and exhilarated state, you are ready to conquer the world – or at least your opponent.

There is a good reason sports massage is becoming more popular – it works!

Prevent and treat sports injuries - Sports massage can be used to help the athlete prevent injuries. The bodywork that is done on all the muscles and joints makes them more resilient. They help lengthen out shortened, tightened muscles and increase muscle stability. Muscle imbalances can be corrected for more harmonious movements that are less likely to result in injury.

Bodywork can be used in the treatment of certain injuries that have already occurred. Identification of the problem is the first step, and the sports massage therapist is often the first to make notice the problems. Some injuries that a sports massage therapist might be able to help are: sprains, strains, plantar fasciitis, and tendinitis.

Relieve muscle pain - Sports massage prevents or treats a condition called delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). This condition happens a few hours after exercise, especially if it is not exercise that the athlete is accustomed to doing. This condition cannot only be painful, but it can also affect the player's ability to perform well in the next event or even cause him problems with everyday functioning. Massage can be used to treat this condition in most cases.

Increase flexibility and range of motion - Bodywork can improve flexibility. Part of the time in a sports massage is spent with the massage therapist stretching the body parts to improve joint flexibility and relieve joint pain. This passive stretching also improves range of motion for the athlete.

Increase the circulation of blood in the body - Sports massage, like any massage, will increase the circulation of blood in the body. Of course, improved circulation is always important, but it is especially helpful for athletes. The circulation in the muscles slows down during activity, and the muscles become tight and sore a few hours later. After a massage, the muscles will be refreshed by this wash of new, oxygenated blood.

Increases flow in lymphatic system - Sports massage increases flow in lymphatic system. This renewed circulation, along with the improved circulation of blood, helps the body carry away waste products. This is a good thing, since athletes' muscles build up large amounts of different types of waste, such as lactic acid, during prolonged events.

Achieve peak performance - Sports massage is a special type of massage that is particularly helpful to athletes. It is used before, during and after sports events. Many of Sport Massage clients are elite athletes and have sports massages done regularly in order to prepare their body for an upcoming event.

The massage therapist can use massage to either sedate or stimulate the nerve endings. In a pre-event massage it would be important to do everything to stimulate the muscles and nerves for the game ahead. In a post-event massage, relaxation is the key to success. Neuromuscular Reprogramming [NMR]

NMR can provide solutions for conditions, which have not previously responded to therapy. NMR is an essential piece of effective rehabilitation. It accomplishes results fast!

Neuromuscular Reprogramming is an approach to structural bodywork that engages the motor control center in the brain to rewrite the motor programs governing coordinated movement. NMR can quickly correct the dysfunctional postural and movement patterns that result from overuse and injury. These are the source of mystifying chronic pain and degeneration in muscle and joints.

NMR achieves dramatic results in relieving pain, restoring function and range of motion, accelerate recovery from acute injuries, resolve the persistent effects of chronic injury, alleviate the symptoms of repetitive stress and optimize athletic performance.

Muscle pain matters: it's an important problem. Aches and pains are an extremely common medical complaint, and trigger points seem to be a factor in many of them. They are a key factor in headaches including migraine and cluster headaches as well, neck pain and low back pain, and much more. Doctors in pain clinics tend to know about trigger points. But they also often limit their treatment methods exclusively to injection therapies and anything less than really epic chronic pain won't qualify you for admittance to a pain clinic in the first place. This option is only available to patients for whom trigger points are a truly horrid primary problem, or a major complication. I will help you to release a trigger point and you will notice a distinct reduction in symptoms over the next several hours.

Bowen is not like massage, acupressure or chiropractic. It is simply unique. There is no manipulation or force used in any of the moves. Bowen can be performed through light clothing. These pauses and the gentleness of the treatment are what make Bowen unique.

Ortho-Bionomy is a gentle, non-invasive, system of healing that reminds the body of its natural ability to restore balance. It is based on a simple and profound philosophy: allow the body to correct itself. The hallmark of Ortho-Bionomy is pain relief. The founder, British-trained Osteopath Arthur Lincoln Pauls, discovered how to gently stimulate the body's reflexes for self-correction in a way that supports a person's own healing mechanisms.

The body is stimulated using gentle movements, comfortable positioning, brief compression and subtle contact. The result is seemingly effortless pain and tension relief, natural re-alignment, relaxation and a deep sense of well-being. The individual is empowered to participate in their own recovery, and through the process can begin to rediscover the ability to heal and restore comfort, ease and balance back into their body.

helps you to return to a state of balance and harmony on all levels – physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Reiki is generally done as a laying on of hands form of healing. Sessions will leave you feeling more calm, clear, grounded and at peace. Reiki energy is very intelligent, and flows to the places where it is most needed at the time to restore one to a feeling of balance and health. Reiki is also helpful in supplying your body with the energy it requires to heal itself and it complements all other forms of medical and natural healing.

The human body is an energy system likea battery or magnet. It has positive, negative and neuter poles and currents of energy that flow through them. Drawing from Western manipulative techniques, naturopathy, Chinese energy medicine and Ayurvedic medicine, Randolph Stone, an osteopath, naturopath, chiropractor and PT formulated his therapy based on the underlying principle of wireless currents in, around and through the body. According to Stone, it is this subtle energy flow that gives life and through which the soul functions. Quite simply, disease occurs when the flow is disrupted.
Polarity therapy, rather than treating disease, is focused on reestablishing the natural balance of this flow, which in turn allows healing to take place. Although massage and polarity therapy each stand firmly on their own merits, in combination they can raise the healing relationship, for both client and practitioner, to a higher level.

Emotional Freedom Technique or Tapping is a simple but effective technique somewhere in between hypnosis, meditation, and acupressure. It can provide instant relief to stressful situations in your life. Most people find immediate relief from applying this method to the most stressful feelings in their present situation. Continued application can then produce profound changes in your life.

Myofascial pain differs from other types of pain because it originates in "trigger points," which are related to stiff, anchored areas within the myofascia. The pain that a trigger point causes is often difficult to localize, though. During myofascial release therapy, the therapist locates myofascial areas that feel stiff and fixed instead of elastic and movable under light manual pressure. These areas, though not always near what feels like the source of pain, are thought to restrict muscle and joint movements, contributing to widespread muscle pain. The focused manual pressure and stretching used in myofascial release therapy loosen up restricted movement, leading indirectly to reduced pain.
